Dear GHD Member,
The Public information office relays the message that the leading cause of injury deaths among people of 65 and older are due to slips and falls. The Missouri death rate due to falling is 31% higher than the national average. Theses sobering statistics illustrate the size of the problem and the enormous costs that falls have on our community. Educating the public about the serious problem of falls is a priority. Older adults can take five simple actions to protect their independence and reduce their risk of falling. 1. Exercise regularly. 2. Ask their doctor or pharmacist to review their medications (both prescriptions and over the counter) to reduce side effects and interactions that could cause dizziness. 3. Have their eyes checked at least once a year. 4. Improve the lighting in their home. 5. Reduce the hazards in their home that lead to falls, such as loose carpets, lack of bathroom safety equipment and slippery or uneven surfaces. Prepare yourself for tomorrow. It could save your life.

Donations

Dear GHD Member:

This is such an exciting time for Get Healthy DeSoto. Our membership is growing and we are spreading the enthusiasm to surrounding communities. We have some significant projects under consideration for DeSoto. As a member I know you understand and appreciate the accomplishments GHD has made so far. I would like to update you on a couple of projects we are working on at this time.
Walking/Bicycle Trail in Ritcher Park
This would enable people to better utilize Ritcher Park in a healthy active way. The trail would cost approximately $13,500. At this time GHD has $2,500.00 on deposit with the City of DeSoto to go toward this project.
Walking Pocket Maps
Some of you may have seen the maps we currently have for three different courses throughout DeSoto. Our goal is to print seven additional courses. The total cost of the project is $3,099.50. This would give us 2,000 copies of each new map, reprint 1,000 copies of the three existing maps and would provide 10 outdoor plastic map holders.
Get Healthy DeSoto is proud to be able to provide the free membership that gives you access to the many educational sessions, newsletters and activities hosted by GHD. Our intention is to maintain this free membership.
If you would like to make a tax deductible contribution toward the projects listed above please make your check payable to “Get Healthy DeSoto” and mail to Get Healthy DeSoto, c/o Debby Campbell, 431 Johnston Drive, DeSoto, Mo. 63020. All donations are appreciated. We hope you will consider becoming a vested member in these projects.
Thank you for your participation in making DeSoto a healthier and active community.

Sincerely,
Cathy Boyer
Secretary of Get Healthy DeSoto
