Dear GHD Member,
I hope that everyone read the article in Parade Magazine on August 24th entitled “Food to Make Kids Smart” by Joy Bauer. The following excerpt is from that article.
“Kids who want to ace their next exams may need to do more than cram before class. Studies show that what a child eats has a direct effect on test performance. Children who routinely consume sweets and junk food may suffer from brain fog at crunch time. But there are solutions. ….Whether it’s a morning or afternoon exam, pre-test meals should consist of high-fiber carbohydrates plus some lean protein. This winning combination leads to an awake and alert student. High-quality carbohydrates such as fruits, vegetables and whole grains are rich in fiber and prevent blood sugar from soaring and then crashing like it does with sugary carbs. They also provide the brain with glucose, its preferred form of fuel. Adding in a bit of protein like turkey, chicken eggs or beans further stabilizes blood sugar.”
The article goes on to suggest breakfast, lunch and afternoon snacks. If these alternative suggestions work for kids, they will work for adults also. Does this information inspire you to make any changes? Hope so!

Donations

Dear GHD Member:

This is such an exciting time for Get Healthy DeSoto. Our membership is growing and we are spreading the enthusiasm to surrounding communities. We have some significant projects under consideration for DeSoto. As a member I know you understand and appreciate the accomplishments GHD has made so far. I would like to update you on a couple of projects we are working on at this time.
Walking/Bicycle Trail in Ritcher Park
This would enable people to better utilize Ritcher Park in a healthy active way. The trail would cost approximately $13,500. At this time GHD has $2,500.00 on deposit with the City of DeSoto to go toward this project.
Walking Pocket Maps
Some of you may have seen the maps we currently have for three different courses throughout DeSoto. Our goal is to print seven additional courses. The total cost of the project is $3,099.50. This would give us 2,000 copies of each new map, reprint 1,000 copies of the three existing maps and would provide 10 outdoor plastic map holders.
Get Healthy DeSoto is proud to be able to provide the free membership that gives you access to the many educational sessions, newsletters and activities hosted by GHD. Our intention is to maintain this free membership.
If you would like to make a tax deductible contribution toward the projects listed above please make your check payable to “Get Healthy DeSoto” and mail to Get Healthy DeSoto, c/o Debby Campbell, 431 Johnston Drive, DeSoto, Mo. 63020. All donations are appreciated. We hope you will consider becoming a vested member in these projects.
Thank you for your participation in making DeSoto a healthier and active community.

Sincerely,
Cathy Boyer
Secretary of Get Healthy DeSoto
